Pedestrian Bus

The pedestrian bus is widespread worldwide; in our area, people practice it, for example, in Prague or Vienna. The first pedestrian buses in Bratislava started in 2023.

How to organise a pedestrian bus at your school?

We have written down a few steps to help you prepare for this activity.

  1. Find a parent or staff coordinator (or organizing team).
  2. Prepare a list of stops and post it in prominent places in the school with an invitation to join in.
  3. Mark the stops with the octopus symbol and involve children in the activity.
  4. Make a mock-up of a pedestrian bus with the children – take inspiration from the photos below.
  5. Print out a diary for the children to write down what they experienced during the journey, how they felt or how many times they participated in the activity.

Which schools have already joined the pedestrian bus?

During our autumn two-week call in 2023, 4 schools in Bratislava took part in the activity:

  • Černyševského Primary School
  • Vývojová Primary School
  • Za kasárňou Primary School
  • Katarína Brúderová Primary School

Katarína Brúderová Primary School in Vajnory was also among the participating schools. How did the pedestrian bus work at this school?

“The children look forward to the pedestrian bus every morning. They get up better, and I am finally at work at half past seven. I would definitely recommend the pedestrian bus to other parents.” – Jarka, mum.

“My son didn’t want to walk the pedestrian bus without me initially, but he managed. As a guide, I had a great time talking to the boys about karate and the sports they do.” – Jacob, father.

“Thanks to the pedestrian bus, I met other parents – so not only the children but also the parents are making new social contacts.” – Lucia, mum.

In the pedestrian bus challenge from 2023, the pupils from the 2. A class from the Primary School Vývojová in Rusovce won. They made a total of 188 trips to school actively – on foot or a bike.

If you are still deciding, organize a pedestrian bus for at least one day and try the activity together.
